Depending on how much you use pointers and longs in your data structures, going to 64-bit can do anything from not changing your size at all to exactly doubling it. Hence, when choosing whether to install the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version of your distribution on your 64-bit machine, it is not a no-brainer.

SQL 2005 32bit upgrade to 64bit possible?
OEM copies do not include both 32-bit and 64-bit versions nor do they include a license to use either one at your selection. So you'd have to buy a retail copy of Windows Vista to install the 64-bit version, or see if HP will give you a 64-bit version to install. -- Richard G. Harper [MVP Shell/User]

32bit 64bit version
All the 32 bit ports that I tried so far (all except cvsup) seem to work fine but they still pick up shared libs from /usr/local/lib which will cause problems if I now add 64bit ports. I really don't want to have to recompile and retest any 32bit port in 64bit mode if it already works well enough.

32bit and 64bit difference and memory alignment
Quite upsetting as I have always run FreeBSD but not the 64 bit version and its a bit too late to do an OS reload of 32 bit version. Want to trade my 32bit version for your 64bit version
For example, move to HP-UX 11 64bit and you have no choice but 64bit 9i. Of course, you can always install 32bit 8.1.7... but then running 32bit on a 64bit platform is also not the brightest of ideas (unless this is required to get older legacy 32bit executables to run in which case there are other alternatives).

In the future I'll simply use 32bit systems for web frontends if my benchmarks confirm this trend. As an aside, have you measured a 32-bit ruby binary running on the 64-bit system? I recall you mentioned trying a 32-bit ruby in a chroot ... but what was puzzling me was why the chroot was needed?
